How to Pick the Right Roof for Your Home

It doesn’t matter if you are building a new home from scratch or if you simply need to replace your existing roof, a new roof is an important decision. Style is one factor, but it isn’t the only one. The truth is that not every type of roof material will work for every house. A roof with a low slope will be able to use materials that a very steep pitch will not. How to choose the right type of material? Let’s take a look at a few of the choices.

  • Asphalt Shingles- These are the most common of all roofing materials. They are fairly inexpensive and easy to install. Standard single thickness shingles will last about 15 years, while laminated shingles will last at least 25 years.
  • Cedar Shingles – Wood shingles were commonly used for centuries and they are still a good option, however, they can be a bit pricey. Also, in some areas, these types of wood roofs are not allowed. Although most people use cedar, southern pine and redwood are also used. A properly applied cedar roof can last 25 years.
  • Slate – This is one of the most durable types of material around. Slate can come from many different places around the U.S. It lasts so long that many 100-year-old houses that are falling apart still have slate roofs that are in excellent condition! As you might expect, slate is very expensive, but if longevity is what you are looking for; slate cannot be equaled.
  • Tile or Cement – You often see red tile roofing on Mission style or Spanish Colonial style homes. Some homes use cement that is shaped and colored like tile. Both of these options are very durable, but keep in mind that real Spanish tile can break easily if you live in an area that frequently gets pelted with ping pong sized hail,

Chances are that the existing roof on your home now will determine what your next roof will be. You should consider not just the cost, but texture, color, weight, and durability. Whichever material you choose, be certain your roofing contractor uses flashing, not simply roofing tar.
